  • About

Pecan exists to see an end to poverty in all its forms: we were created to address the most pressing needs faced by our community, but poverty is nuanced and complicated and the pressing needs expressed through the need for foodbanks, while important, is a symptom of the root causes (low income, debt, unemployment, poor mental and/or physical health, social isolation, loneliness, stigma, discrimination, lack of choice, poor housing etc.).

Pecan aims to alleviate some of the symptoms so that people can survive while working holistically on the deeper issues so that people can thrive.

What we do:

Pecan is a community charity based in Peckham, working to end poverty in all its forms for the residents of Southwark.

Pecan works with Southwark communities to increase income, improve wellbeing and social connections, and increase the voice of our community in issues affecting them.

We do this through several core projects, all of which provide a holistic approach to tackling the causes of poverty not just the symptoms:

  • Southwark Foodbank – provides emergency food parcels plus advice and signposting to support.
  • Peckham Pantry – Choose at least £15 worth of food for just £4.50 in our shop, plus advice and signposting to support.
  • Women’s Service – Gender specific, trauma informed advocacy and support for women facing multiple disadvantage.
  • Together – Community and life-skills activities at our café space
  • Employment Support – Help to get people back into work, through professional guidance and employment skill sessions.

Everything we do is underpinned by our Values of: Kindness, Belief and Hope

Your Donations

Your Gift of Hope at Christmas not only supports us to meet the increased demand at this time of year, but they also help us to continue to provide a consistent and quality service throughout the year.

This year we are aiming to raise a total of £45,000.

Christmas 2023

The money raised through this campaign will provide:

  • All Pecan clients with extra Christmas parcels and treats including children's books
  • 100 families with a £50 voucher
  • 50 single person households with a £25 voucher
  • Support us to continue our services in 2024 including a warm space and free cafe, emergency food parcels and advice and advocacy

And Beyond…

Reaching (or even exceeding) our target will help us sustain the support we provide well into 2024:

  • £25 could provide an emergency food parcel with enough food for 3 days.
  • £50 could enable someone to benefit from a one-to-one employment preparation session, supporting them out of poverty through earning an income.
  • £100 could help a woman receive ongoing one-to-one support from one of our Advocates, enabling her to address her needs.
  • £150 could keep our café 'Together' open for the week, supporting those who are lonely and socially isolated to better wellbeing.
  • £250 could stock our Pantry shelves with healthy, nutritious, culturally appropriate food.

Thank you!

Your Gifts of Hope mean the world to us – they are the difference between someone in our community receiving he support they need or facing unimaginable hardships. Your gifts mean people can be more hopeful for the future and will help us to enable people to move from finding ways to survive, to finding ways to thrive.

We know things are tough right now with the Cost-of-Living crisis affecting us all, so we are so thankful for the kindness and generosity of our community.
